Building a billiard and game room on a budget can be a challenge that the whole family can get involved in. A billiard and game room will be a great place for gatherings and for entertainment.

The Plan

There should be a plan put in place when building on a budget. The plan should consider all facets of building a billiard room on a budget. The budget should be based on affordability. There should be all factors considered when drawing this plan, including the size of the dedicated space, and the overall style of the house.

A Dedicated Space

A space dedicated as a game room does not have to be a fancy space it can be an attic space or in the basement or even part of the garage can be the dedicated space. Building on a budget is an easier goal to meet if a space is already available and does not have to be constructed. Dedicating a room of the home to a space where family and friends can gather is a great idea and will increase the value of time spent at home.

Materials for Building on a Budget

A billiard table is not cheap when purchased new, so look for an older used version. Building the room on a budget will require some ingenuity when gathering materials. Second hand materials are a good choice because it will help to keep the budget in tact. The table will be the prime focus of the room and will be the most expensive piece of equipment in the room. The room could focus on big game tables such as fooseball tables or can be dedicated to the billiard table and small board games. Depending on the design depends on how much will be spent on the games for the room.

Types of Games for a Billiard and Game Room

A billiard and game room on a budget does not have to be a flimsy affair. The games in the room can be as simple as a video game station and some seating along with the billiard table. A game room on a budget can be a billiard table and some other game stations, checkers, chess and the like. All of these items can be purchased second hand or can be created. A great game table can be created from an old parsons table refinished to be the base from a checked board to use with chess and checkers. Another great option is to use items that are already in the home.

Set A Budget and Stick to it

A billiard and game room can be completely within the budget as long as a realistic budget is planned to begin with. Shop around and get creative.

Its an age old question: Pinball Machine or Arcade Game?

Its a tough a call! The majority of us are not lucky enough to have the money and/or the space for both. If you do, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

Obviously they are two different kinds of machines that have a very different fan base. Generally, but certainly not all the time, arcade machines tend to have a younger following than their pinball counterparts.

But the most important thing to remember is what goes well with the machines. How does the game fit the decor of your home.

For instance, arcade games tend to go really well with a room that has more of a college atmosphere. You should college banners as well as ping pong table, big screen tv, etc..

Pinball machines have a more sophisticated (for a lack of a better word) vibe. They give that impression of a stylish bachelor pad. Perfect for a game room with darts, billiard tables, etc..

Pinball machines can also work perfectly with the decor of the home. For instance if you put an arcade game in the hall or living room they would tend to stick out like a sore thumb. Meanwhile pinball machines can work under the right circumstances.

I don’t care who you are. Seeing an old pinball machine from the 1950s in someone’s house just adds an element of “cool”. Just like an antique that’s hanging on the wall, it really adds a lot of charm to the presentation of a home.

A game of billiard is definitely fun and exciting especially for the male species. They love the thrill of checking and waiting if the ball they hit would shoot in the hole or not. For them, nothing can beat the feeling of victory every time they take down their opponents. However, billiard players will not be able to enjoy the game much less win one without these essential billiard supplies to play the game. These three are important, that is why, they need to be taken good care of.

The most common and most important billiard supplies is the cue stick which is the one used to hit the ball and let it flow smoothly down the hole. Cue sticks need to be straight so as to give you a straight hit as well. The weight of these cue sticks vary so that every billiard player picks one of his own that he is comfortable with in order to take control of the ball.

Pool chalk is another form of billiard supplies needed to sharpen the tip of the stick so that the ball won’t slide once the stick hits it. From time to time, they need to rub this to the cue stick tip to have better control of the movement of the ball on the table.

Sometimes, the next pool ball that should be hit is too far and too hard to reach no matter how much the player bends on the table. This is where a bridge stick comes in. Bridge sticks can be used to guide the cue stick to the right direction and serve as the extension of the stick for those difficult to hit long shots.

In order to maintain a billiard table’s good shape, pool covers are necessary in order to prevent the table from having stains or damages since billiard tables are costly and billiard enthusiasts invest so much on it.

You may have noticed (especially if you watch Sky Sports) that around Christmas and New Year there is rather a lot of darts on television. This is due to the fact that TWO world championships are played. This is highly unusual in any sport (other than boxing) but how did we get to this?

Darts is a game which became popular among the working classes and was often played in pubs. In 1973 the British Darts Organization was formed (BDO) and this led to to the first world championships being held in 1978. Darts began to enjoy a golden age as tournaments were screened on the BBC and ITV and players such as Eric Bristow, John Lowe and Jocky Wilson became household names.

However one fateful day in 1980 a BBC comedy programme called ‘Not the nine o’clock news’ (starring Mel Smith and Gryth Rhys Jones) screened a sketch mocking darts players, as they famously downed pints at the oche. Although the popularity of the game did not diminish at that time, the damage this did to the image of the game was immense. A slow decline followed and by 1988 ITV had stopped showing darts altogether and the world championships was the only event left on television.

The initial boom in darts had led to an influx of players eager to ply their trade, but with the television coverage now dwindling along with the prize money as sponsors left the sport, these players become disenchanted with the BDO, who they felt could be doing more to promote the game. Even the move to ban players drinking alcohol on stage from 1989 did little to enhance the public image of darts and darts players. In 1992 a group of sixteen players formed the World Darts Council (WDC). The group included every active previous world champion such as Phil Taylor, Eric Bristow and John Lowe. Leighton Rees who had already retired was the only previous world champion not to join. The first event the WDC staged was the Lada UK Masters in the same year.

In 1993 the WDC players competed in the BDO Championships as normal while sporting their new WDC badges on their sleeves. The BDO subsequently asked them to remove the badges. The players then decided if the BDO would not recognise their organisation they would go there own way and form a separate tour. The WDC signed a deal with Sky Television to screen three tournaments a year. This in turn led to another world championships with the first being held in 1994 (although it started on Boxing Day 1993) with Dennis Priestley winning it.

The WDC has since changed its name to the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). Relations between the two darts bodies remain uneasy following a costly three year court battle which ended in 1997. The PDC has the larger tour with more events and greater prize money while the BDO has retained BBC coverage and larger viewing audiences due to being on terrestrial television. The PDC has been busy developing tournaments in USA, Australia, Netherlands, South Africa and Germany among other places. The televised PDC events in thee UK are televised on Sky. One major development for darts in 2007 was the return of ITV who screened the Grand Slam of Darts. The event was unusual as it was ran by the PDC but was open to players who won or were runners up in major PDC and BDO events over the previous two years. The only player who declined to play was the then BDO champion Martin Adams.

So with the two professional bodies both still happy to loathe each other to the detriment of the sport it looks like we will have two world darts champions for years to come. This year it was John Part (PDC) and Mark Webster (BDO). On one hand there is more darts to watch, but surely there should be only one true champion of the world.

Are you looking for playing card accessories? This article will provide you with some tips on selecting the perfect accessories for your game.

There is a wide variety of playing card accessories out there. You can find everything from decks of cards with photos on them to fun party decor. Cards have been a valuable part of world culture for centuries, and have served as a historical almanac. Their design through the years can help us to comprehend politics, lifestyles and innovation. They are also useful teaching tools for children. Here are a few options for all ages and skill levels.

For the Collector

Cards are fun to collect. From offbeat themes (Beatles, fishing lures, pin-up girls, or superheroes for example) to tarot symbology, they keep us fascinated. You can find colorful decks in many stores. Often they will have funny photos or beautiful scenery on them. Custom playing cards can also be created online through some companies with a family photo or beloved pet.

Collecting decks of cards from the different places you have been is a fun way to start a collection. Get kids excited about traveling by starting them on this tradition. Try to find a new set each time you go somewhere they haven’t been before.

Cards can be classified by size (mini, jumbo, poker), by era, by use, by manufacturer or by country of origin. If you are a collector, or know someone who is, it’s important to keep all of these things in mind for a well rounded collection.

For the Home

Playing card decor can be great for a party or home casino night. Make it easy on yourself and buy a pre-assembled kit, complete with centerpiece, danglers and cutouts depicting the four suits. They can be found at almost any party store or create your own if you have the time. Also available are edible sugar cake decorations with a card theme. Use those on a birthday cake for that card lover in your life.

For more elegant home decor playing card boxes of all types and materials are available. A wooden or leather playing card case would make a great gift.

You can also buy card themed Christmas stockings, designer plates, watches with card faces, votive candles, wall plaques, and even coasters. For a few dollars, amateur magicians can buy a giant set of playing cards to spice up their magic show decor. Other trick cards can also be found at magic shops.

For the Game

Kids love to play games, but sometimes their small hands can’t accommodate a large number of cards for a game like Canasta. Also, seniors might have arthritis issues. Why should they be excluded from the joy of cards? Now they don’t have to be. Card holders are made especially for little or arthritic hands making it easier and more fun for everybody.

A playing card tray can accommodate your draw and discard piles, and keep them neat. Some valet models swivel as well, making the reach to the draw and discard piles easier for everyone. Automatic shufflers are widely available as well in the toy and game section of your local store. Some are battery powered and others you just shake to mix up the cards.

Wooden playing card holders sit on the table in front of you. Some are curved for easy viewing and for better card privacy. Made out of wood they are very durable and easy to clean. Wooden playing card racks are great for parties too, because, if you want to snack or drink while playing both of your hands are still free to do so.

These are just a few ideas to enhance your gaming experience and spice up your décor. Next time you’re looking I hope you can find the perfect playing card accessories for your home and family.

The new millennium is the millennia of PC games. But before PCs became a household phenomenon, the only games of its kind that kids knew, and a whole generation of Americans have grown up playing, were arcade games.

Arcade games consist of a simple, yet bulky machine, with a colorful screen, and some sticks or buttons to play with, and a device to put coins in, which allows the game to be played for a particular period of time.

Today, you can find arcade games that run on computers, using emulators. But before that had happened, arcade games were typically found, apart from the especial entertainment centres and video arcades, in restaurants, malls and movie halls. Kids and grown ups alike played mainly three types of arcade games: the famed pinball, video games or redemption games.

Yet, the ancestry of arcade games could be traced to the hugely popular games commonly known as the “amusement park midway games” like ball toss game and shooting galleries which were popular at the beginning of the 20th century.

The 1930s saw the first coin-operated pinball machines. Though being made of wood with all functions mechanical rather than electronic and being a far cry from the electronic ones that were to come much later, they were still quite a hit. The late seventies would see these mechanical pinballs being replaced by electronic games.

The change in fortunes of arcade games happened with the formation of a company called Atari in 1972. This company created the coin-operated machines, beginning with the electronic ping pong game, called Pong. Pong was a huge hit, and led to even more home video game systems being introduced onto the market.

Many games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Space Invaders became huge hits in the late seventies and early eighties, paving the way to a revolution. The last breath to the arcade games was provided by the emergence of two player fighting games like Street Fighter II , Mortal Kombat¸ Fatal Fury, King of fighters etc in the early 90s. However, this was not to redeem the fate of arcade games completely, as the growth in computers and video technology saw the emergence of new type of games, including PC games and games that ran on special consoles such as the Playstation, Gameboy and the X-box pushing arcade games into the sidelines, to almost the end of their existence.

Do you have a game room or recreation area in your home? If you do then it’s important that you have appropriate lighting. If the room is primarily a movie watching area then lights are less important as most of the time you’ll want it dark, but in a true game room you’ll want it well lit all the time so people can see what they’re playing and know they’re doing well. A properly lit room can add to the ambiance of the party and actually enhance the enjoyment of your party guests.

There are a couple of popular lighting options used today. One is pool table lights the other is track lighting. Even if you don’t have a pool table you can have the fun of owning one of these neat light fixtures. They can be hung over a variety of game tables or even your bar. As long as the light’s design matches the decor or theme of the room then there’s no problem. You’ll also want to be sure you have the overhead space for it and that the ceiling joists are strong enough to bear the weight as many of these are rather heavy. These lights are mood creators in themselves. Some people find them so relaxing they are instantly at ease just by walking into a room that has one.

I also mentioned track lighting. These are great when you have sports memorabilia you want to feature. We had a friend who had the most incredible sports gear on display from all his years being with his favorite team as a trainer. Signed balls, posters, autographed pictures, you name it he had it. And the entire display was featured with it’s own set of track lights meticulously pointed in the right areas so we could see each item distinctly. It was well done and made you feel like part of the team just being there.

Sure, you’ve never tried hitting a dart board in your whole life. But who says you can never try? This and more accuracy games are what online dart games have to offer you. And yes, if you’re looking for colorful balloons instead of circular boards to shoot at, no problem – everything’s in there too!

Bloons Player Pack 4 is perhaps the best hybrid of levels from its original games of Bloonsworld and My Ninja Kiwi, becoming a game definitely worth trying. For a more interactive precision game, try Blopper – hit small balloons and bonus balloons to give you extra points or speed, time or dart bonuses. Pop as many as you can with Bloons, a fun game with many levels. Unlike other games under the site, however, Don’t Pop That Balloon requires you to do the exact opposite of most games’ objectives: protect the balloon from popping by dodging darts aimed and shot at its direction.

Now if you want the classic darts game complete with the dart board and the classical scoring system, games such as Darts and DartMaster9in1 are just the perfect games for you. There are three modes in Darts (Fun, Real and Challenge Mode), varying in objectives according to difficulty. You can play on either 1-player or 2-player mode with DartMaster9in1, with 27 leaderboards and 3 difficulty levels to choose from. A simple game of your classical 501-system darts is what Pub Dart Master 2 is about. Score as high as you can with FG Dart, while get more points within a shorter span of time with both Pro 501 Darts and Crazy Dart.

You don’t have to have a dart set to shoot – all you need is the presence of your computer and a good sense of imagination.

Billiards – The Beginning – It is believed that the game of billiards originated some time during the 15th century in France and spread to England. This was a form of entertainment for the Europeans. At that time people liked lawn games such as lawn bowling which eventually grew into a game similar to croquet.

Over the years, the game was moved indoors and raised off the floor to a table height. The problem with playing billiards on a table was the balls kept rolling off, so wooden rails or bumpers were attached to the table’s edges to keep the balls in play. The first pool table dates back to around 1470 when King Louis XI had one. King Louis’ pool table had only one pocket in the middle of the table. By the 1500′s, pool tables were common in taverns and public places in France. Around 1600 another modification was made with the addition of rubber strips to the wooden side rails. These were used as cushions to give the balls added bounce when hitting the edges of the table. The rubber also served to protect the wood edges from chipping. Cushions, also called Rail Cushions, were located on the inner side of a table’s wooden rails. The cushions were made from a vulcanized rubber, and the purpose was to cause the billiard balls to rebound off the rubber while minimizing the loss of kinetic energy. The profile of the rail cushion which is the angle in relation to the bed of the table varies between table types. The standard American pool table has a base of 1-3/16″ and a nose height of 1″. This causes the balls’ rebound to be somewhat predictable during game play.

A green cloth covered the table to look like the color of the lawn. The pockets were initiated on to the table in place of the targets from the lawn game. The object of the game then became to use one ball to hit the other balls into the pockets. Since that time, more pockets have been added until the current number of six pockets evolved. As an interesting note, during Civil War times results of pool games were more widely read than war news. Professional pool players assisted in furthering the popularity of the game creating a myth of a pool shark or hustler. Pool has emerged into a game that has seen many changes in technology and socialization since then. Around 1826 a dramatic change was made to the pool table and an Englishman invented the slate bed which made for a much smoother surface to play on. The slate used in the tables is mined from quarries, mostly in China, and sent to factories for inspection as only the best pieces are used in the pool tables. The slate is cut and planed to its desired thickness then drilled with diamond drill bits that cut 18 nail bolts and 6 pockets at one time. A grinding machine then smooths the surface and refines the thickness of the slate. The edges are beveled by hand.

The popularity of the game increased as more people took interest. In America, billiards became popular in the 19th century. There were books written about billiards and rules to guide players. Eventually, a company began manufacturing the equipment to play and the game became known as pool. The name “pool” denotes a bet or ante that is made on the game.
